32Q Celebrations, Challenges and Question
3 Celebrations:
1.) Team Worker
Group work is something that I have continued to improve in during my experience at Animas. This year has included a lot of group work and learning how to work with a variety of people has improved me as both as person and a student. An example of me succeeding in a group work scenario was my ecosystem write-up. This was a project in which I worked with 3 other people and collaborated to write an informational paper on a specific ecosystem and something that was putting it at risk. At first I was nervous to work with 3 people on one paper, I was afraid that things like conflicting knowledge and personal systems could conflict with deadlines and final outcomes. The outcome of the paper ended up being a positive thing and working with my group went smoothly. I believe that these outcomes were helped along by patience and collaboration. Team/group work has become a thing that I like and look forward to during projects and I believe it is something that I have grown in.
2.) Reflection
This semester reflection has been a major key to my success because it pushes me to improve or refine more on all of my work. Seeing areas that I succeed in and areas that I could improve in have set a clear outline for my work. It has also helped me create goals for myself, and what to pay attention to when writing and editing my work. For example, while working on my Quadratic Equations Workshop for Advanced Algebra reflection was a helpful factor that contributed to my success because I would look back at every problem and see what I could do similarly in order to complete the next problem. Reflection has made me successful because of the amount of time and effort that I have put into refining all of my work. I feel like I have become a better student because I am pushed to work harder and spend more time proofreading and getting extra critiques.
3.) Accountability
This year I have found that a lot of work that I am doing does not include turning in or having a teacher grade it. This is a new system for me and taking advantage of it by not doing the work is an easy alternative. After slacking and not finishing or even starting a couple of explorations in advanced algebra I saw a reflection on my grade when I had serious trouble with my workshops and other assignments that I was required to turn in. After seeing this drop in my grade I began to try and finish as much as I could on all explorations. To me this demonstrates accountability. I realize now that understanding work is far more important than what grade I will receive (although the grade I get will reflect how much time I am putting into my work). Being accountable for what I do and do not do will only affect me and it is up to me how I want to go about that. An example of me demonstrating good accountability is in Exploration 12 from my advanced algebra class. I worked hard in both class and after school to understand how to do it while using available resources. This reflected well on my grade and also my general understanding of the topic. I put in time and effort in order to understand a piece of work that wasn’t being graded, but I was aware that I would end up confused later on if I didn’t try to understand the content when it was introduced.
2 Challenges:
2.) Positivity
Staying positive is important for me in order to get work done efficiently. I believe it makes my work better quality and in the end I feel more confident in what I’ve created. This semester I have struggled a lot with stress levels and balancing grades and enjoyment of what I’m learning and creating. These two things have started to affect how positive I feel about my classes, my work, and me as a student. I have seen this start to affect my academics when I often dread working on a project or going to a specific class. I have never been a learner that dreads doing something, or that gets stressed out about silly things. While creating my calavera for spanish class I was stressed out during the creative process in fear of it affecting my grade. The intense focus on my grade and my lack of motivation contradicted each other leaving me stressed out and in turn negative and unexcited to finish a project that I would usually consider fun. Looking back at this semester I am not proud of a lot work that I have made, trying to work on my attitude and balance my time better will help me be a better student and enjoy my work more.
Question:
How can I find a balance in which my grades stay up to my standards but I am also able to enjoy the creative process of my projects?
