Movie Project Reflection
Purpose The purpose of this project was to educate a larger audience (the public) of a more complicated issue, which was mitosis and meiosis. I believe that because I was an assistant script writer incorporating content into the script was a very important job. That being said I learned a lot about mitosis and meiosis. I think that our script was very educational and we incorporated a lot of good content into our movie. As a whole class they met the purpose of educating the general public, everyone put a large amount of effort into understanding the content in the script. Personally I think I did well taking on a lot of different tasks. Although my original role in the project was to be a scriptwriter I did a good job of doing anything that the class needed from me. Throughout the project the class did a really good job of making the script interpretable and humorous.
Areas for Growth A big challenge that I had while writing the script was making it understandable and funny at the same time. I was able to incorporate content really well, but when it came to making it sound natural for the actors I struggled quite a bit. We had a brief issue with lack of coordination between script and storyboarding which set the project back by a week or two. Personally, I could have either taken a different role, or practiced on trying to pay more attention to either humor or content. As a class, better time management would have resolved the issue quickly. Collaboration looked like all of the teams working together to make both the script and filming go successfully. I collaborated in this project by helping in every department/group in order to assistant wherever necessary.
Looking forward I would attempt to stick with solely my group so that I could grow and improve the most in the topic I chose. I would change the amount of time we left for editing, because not being able to finish the film was a small disappointment. It also would have been cool for everyone to have experienced every job. On the flip side, I really liked how we had the opportunity to completely devote ourselves to a role and make it a really personal experience.
Evergreen Elk: Take Action Project
While completing this project things that I found helpful (methods, theories, ideas, and skills) included analysis and past knowledge. A method and skill that was extremely helpful for me throughout this entire project was analysis. When working on the write up I had to analyze evidence and data in order to write about solutions. A helpful theory and idea that helped me and group decide on a topic was past knowledge on the topic. In my freshmen year I did a project that had to do with wildlife corridors. Having the past knowledge of this was helpful when we were collecting data and creating a list of solutions.
The two most significant things that I did during the project were writing the solutions section of the report and working in Horse Gulch for the day. The section that I wrote for the report was important and significant to me because I found the analysis interesting to write and I enjoyed the process of going through the evidence and data that our group found. I think that I’m taking away a lot of new information from this project because I wrote the analysis. Going through all of the data and analyzing solutions for roadkill helped me learn more and in more depth. Going to Horse Gulch for the day gave me a super hands on experience. That being said it set a really fun and interactive tone for the entire project. Being involved and interested helped me contribute well to the project and the eventual success that we had as a group.
I experienced a lot of difficulty when creating my infographic. The process of learning how to use a new program was a project within itself and I had a lot of difficulty saving the infographic. Personal characteristics that contributed to my the difficulty that I experienced included a lot of procrastination and negativity. Starting my infographic more than 3 days off of the exhibition would have been really helpful in reducing my stress.
Content wise a lot of information was confirmed, such as information on wildlife corridors. In past projects I had gotten snippets of information, but not enough to learn very much or to be able to talk about it from an educational point. Assumptions that I have made in the past are that I don’t do well writing in an analytical way, working on this project and writing some of it contradicted this and helped me grow more as an analytical writer.
I went into this project knowing the basics of ecology and a bit about Durango’s ecosystem. Besides this I didn’t have very much information ecology as a whole. Some of the biggest things that I learned in this project was about the characteristics of life, biotic and abiotic factors, and levels of organization. All of these things related directly to our project. Starting the project I didn’t have any idea of how extreme the roadkill situation was. It was interesting being able to brainstorm ideas that may help the issue with our group and then go and see has been done and what can be done to improve the issue.
During the infographic creation process I struggled to create a product that I was proud of and that was well refined. In the end my infographic was not printed at the exhibition due to possible errors in spelling or formatting. This tells me that I needed to have spent more time proofreading and editing to get an well refined attractive project. That being said, if I were to repeat this project I would have spent a lot more time on the creation of my infographic in both the content aspect as well as the artistic part of it.
Things that I am taking away from this project is that humans have the power to make a positive impact on our world and environment (whether it be species or the actual environment). I learned about how much of a bad effect we make on everything that isn’t our own race. Helping the environment and preserving our environment isn’t hard and small things can improve issues drastically. That being said I am taking away a new interest in preserving our environment. This has encouraged me to consider jobs in this field later in my life.
Having better skills in the photoshop program would have been beneficial in order to save time and some energy figuring out how to use it. Some knowledge on solutions would have been beneficial because having some past knowledge on the subject would allow for me to go deeper into cost, effectiveness, and statistics.
Allow some of the activities didn’t relate directly to my subject I think that they all worked well for my learning style. Interactive field trips such as the Horse Gulch trail work was really effective for my learning style because we were outside and interacting with experts in Durango. Other activities that I found interesting was writing the ecosystem write up and the activity in which we picked up seeds in an isolated section of ground and recorded results in a certain amount of time. My participation in this project has changed my approach to analysis and group work. My lack of experience in analysis originally posed a bit of an issue and gave me a small amount of trouble at first. After working more on it and revising I was able to find that I enjoyed the process of it and I was able to absorb a lot more information because of the in depth process of analysis. Group work has never been much of an issue for me but I still believe I improved quite a bit with coordinating and collaborating when writing one shared paper.
