LINK Internship 2018
LINK is a 3 week long internship where juniors get a feel for what a chosen workplace might be like. LINK stands for Leading Internships for New Knowledge, during the 3 weeks we don't go to actual classes and instead follow a mentor in a chosen work environment. Students are meant to gain new knowledge, and hopefully gain insight into whether their LINK is a possible career choice in the future.

Overview
Four Corners OB-GYN is one of Durango's local women's health and obstetrics offices. They provide prenatal care as well as a variety of women's health resources. I chose to intern here because I am passionate about medicine, women's health, and obstetrics research.

Reflection (5/19)
Over the past 3 weeks I have learned more than I thought possible, I have gotten insight to an extremely interesting field. I have learned about patient care, medical procedures, and child birth. I was able to attend a variety of appointments of all different situations, and was able to be in the room for several births. I was able to shadow a variety of doctors and feel that I have a very good baseline understanding of the women's health and obstetrics field. This was one of the best experiences of my life when it comes to career options and I am sure that I want to go into some field of medicine, hopefully women's health and obstetrics! I am excited to prepare myself for further research and understanding of the medical field in the future. Doing this internship really excited me for what is to come in college and the rest of my career future!
LINK Project
For my LINK project I decided to write a research essay on the importance of accessibility to contraception, and the way it impacts women and families alike who struggle to find access to it. I got insight by shadowing in patient rooms and got first hand experience by talking to a variety of doctors about health risks of lack of accessibility as well as how insurance makes a difference in this.
LINK Reflection
Some of the skills that were most useful to me going into LINK were flexibility and perseverance skills. For example, if I were working long or uncertain hours I would need to be flexible with my day and perseverance through more difficult appointments or situations.
I developed a significant amount of patience and compassion throughout my LINK, I was exposed to a huge variety of people and situations. Some of them were very kind and incredible people, but some of them were more difficult and harder to relate to. With these learning experiences I feel that I've developed a lot of new and very useful skills that could be utilized for the rest of my life.
I was exposed to a lot of scary or hard situations, I feel that I developed good coping mechanisms for when I was feeling worried or overwhelmed with some of the things I was watching or dealing with. I think that being able to develop good ways of coping and taking moment to myself was a good way of keeping me motivated and excited.
I think that having interns in any situation is useful for mentors and other people working in a business because it shows that everyone is still learning. An intern is learning from their mentor about businesses and other working fields, and the mentor is learning how to teach and handle another person in their field. Having interns in the future at Four Corners OBGYN would be great if any of the doctors would be open to having an intern, as it would teach both the student and the doctor new things.
I realized during my LINK that I differently wanted to go into medicine, I thoroughly enjoyed working with incredible women and being in Labor and Delivery in the hospital made me feel like it was definitely a department I really enjoyed working in. This tells me that I am prepared to start on a college path that involves medicine and women's health.
