The Ethics and Chemistry of Food and Cooking Reflection
In Humanities we focused on what our personal food ethic was, how it made us function as eaters in our society, and as well as the industrial vs. local food system. We spent time writing a food ethic essay, in which we described what our food ethic was and how we had developed it by eating. We also spent time preparing a meal for a group of people, in this we created a theme that our entire meal followed, our chosen theme was fresh/local/spring, with this theme in mind we created an in depth menu that described our meal. Each group member was in charge of a specific part of the meal, such as appetizer or dessert.
During the prep for the meal I wasn’t sure how excited I was for it, I was unsure if our meal would be cohesive or if it reflected my ethic enough. Once we actually started the prepare the food and got to spend time together cooking for a group of close family members and friends I truly appreciate what we were doing. A part of my ethic was community and the social part of eating, and I felt that the meal we prepared truly represented that in a great way. The food turned our amazing, and I felt that I was able to learn a lot about my group members ethics through what they prepared.
Unfortunately, I did not take chemistry this year, so I was unable to participate in the more science focused part of this project. That being said, I can’t really speak to this section. From what I learned from group members and other classmates I think that I should have tried to learn more about the chemistry focused side of my course of the meal.
My way of thinking about food has changed a huge amount. I am more aware of what is going into my body, where it came from, and in what ways it was processed. I feel that I am participating more fully in my diet because of my awareness of food and the way it impacts me, my environment, and other people/living things. Something about studying this topic by writing and then doing something hands on made this an extremely enriching and influential project for me.
