Journalism Project
For this project we did a large amount of research and studying of journalism bias, how the media effects journalism, and how to create a well thought out article. This prep helped me prepare to write my article because it gave me a clear outline of what style of writing I should be striving towards for my final product. The class also went through a large amount of time deciding on a topic that was both interesting to us, and relevant to our world. During the process of choosing a topic I was able to deeply explore some of my interests (science) and from there choose a topic that was relevant and important to our world (biomaterial joint replacements). From this point we began collecting evidence to include in our papers during the writing process. We began writing our papers by using an outline that we had created. We critiqued a classmate(s) paper and left comments that could help them improve. From here we finished our articles in a matter of days. The entire class started to collaborate on a shared website that would include all of the students work. I was a part of a group that edited and left small improvements on all of our classmates articles.
The biggest thing that I will be taking away from this project is how big of an influence the media has on our society. After looking deeply into this during class I was shocked how big of an influence media makes on things such as politics, celebrities, and our everyday lives. I found it extremely interesting to look into the effects someone's news source could be making on their opinion. Looking at how politics can be portrayed in so many different ways felt very relevant and important to our class during the time. This project has really pushed me to think about journalism, media, and bias and balance in a more skeptical way. I’ve learned the importance of looking at different facts and websites to get a more informed opinion on information. The most important thing that that I am taking from this project is using a combination of balanced bias when using the media to get important facts on things such as politics.
I believe that I’ve improved the most in research as a journalist. Learning how to find credible web sites and facts has really made me more aware of the resources I am using in my academics. I believe this will make a difference my entire life in school and in jobs. Something that I wish I could have been better at and hope to improve is my lack of interviews. Although it would have been difficult to get a direct interview from the doctor that I wrote my paper about I could have found a source in Durango that could have shared their opinion or expertise on the topic. What I liked the most about this project was being able to incorporate two different subjects (science and humanities) and make a project out of that that was meaningful to me.
